Madeira wines are fortified wines produced on the island of Madeira, located near Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. They are made from local grapes such as Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. Madeira wines are famous for their long life and unique taste, resulting from a specific aging process called "estufagem", where the wine is exposed to high temperatures for long periods of time. There are different types of Madeira wines, such as Sercial dry wine, Verdelho semi-dry wine, Bual sweet wine and Malmsey sweet wine. Madeira wines can be enjoyed alone or with foods such as seafood, cheeses and desserts.
