Beer kills you slowly, but red wine will save your life

Red wine, the best health ally compared to beer: benefits and comparison of effects on the body

As wine enthusiasts, we know that the debate between wine and beer is much debated. However, recent studies are shedding new light on this issue. As a sommelier who has traveled to vineyards around the world, I have seen the evolution of consumption habits and their impact on health.

Red wine: an elixir with multiple virtues

Red wine, produced by fermenting grapes, is full of compounds that are beneficial to our bodies. Among them, resveratrol, a polyphenol with remarkable antioxidant properties, particularly stands out. This compound contributes to:

  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Improve cognitive health
  • Fighting chronic inflammation

In addition, red wine contains flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins, which help protect our cardiovascular system. These elements, when consumed in moderation, can have a positive impact on our health in the long term .

During my travels, I have noticed that Mediterranean regions, known for their regular and moderate consumption of red wine, often have higher rates of longevity. This phenomenon, known as the "French paradox," has intrigued researchers for decades.

Beer: limited benefits compared to wine

While beer is not without nutritional value, its health benefits appear to be more limited than those of red wine. While it does contain B vitamins and minerals, its antioxidant content is generally lower than that of wine.

A study published in the journal Addiction SSA in June 2024 found significant differences between wine-drinking and beer-dominant countries. The researchers found that wine-producing European countries had the lowest rates of alcohol-related deaths and health harms over the past two decades.

This observation is corroborated by my observations in the field. In the wine regions I visited, wine consumption is often part of a social ritual, accompanying meals, unlike beer which can be associated with more frequent episodes of drunkenness.

Comparison of effects on the body

To better understand the differences between wine and beer, let's look at their respective effects on our bodies:

Criteria Red wine Beer
Antioxidant content High Moderate
Cardiovascular impact Very positive Slightly positive
Risk of drunkenness Low (moderate consumption) Higher
Caloric intake Moderate Pupil

These differences are partly explained by the manufacturing process and the ingredients used. Wine, produced by fermenting grapes, retains many of the fruit's beneficial compounds. Beer, on the other hand, is brewed from cereals, which gives it different nutritional properties.

Towards responsible and informed consumption

It is important to emphasize that the benefits of red wine are only apparent when consumed in moderation and responsibly . The World Health Organization recommends not exceeding two glasses per day for men and one glass for women.

To get the most out of the beneficial properties of wine, it is essential to choose quality wines , rich in polyphenols. Red wines made from grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec are particularly interesting for their antioxidant properties.

However, it is important to remain open to developments in the wine world. New trends are emerging, and some innovative beverages could well appeal to wine lovers while offering health benefits.

As a sommelier and explorer of the world's vineyards, I can only recommend a balanced approach. Let's appreciate wine for its taste qualities and its potential benefits, while remaining aware of the importance of responsible consumption. It is then that we will be able to fully enjoy this age-old nectar, a true ally of our well-being.
