Let's talk little, let's talk wine

Founded in 1892, El Esteco is one of the most prestigious and historic wine producers in the Cafayate region of Salta Province, Argentina. The winery was founded by two French pioneers, David Michel and Gabrielle Torino, who recognized the unique potential of this exceptional terroir. Over the years, the estate has become a symbol of excellence and winemaking tradition in Argentina.

The domain is located in the northwest of Argentina, in the Cafayate Valley, where the vineyards have the characteristic of being located at 1800 m above sea level in the heart of the Andes massif. The soil is poor in alluvium, there is strong solar exposure, low humidity and significant thermal amplitudes. The Don David Reserve cuvée from the El Esteco estate is the house's prestige cuvée, bringing together the highest quality grapes coming more specifically from the Calchaqui area. The manual harvest takes place at the end of March. After fermentation, 70% of the wine is aged in oak barrels and 30% remains in stainless steel vats for 12 months. This wine reveals notes of black berries , plum jam , currants , blackberries , blueberries , violets , dark chocolate and blond tobacco . On the palate, the wine is powerful, but without discarding finesse and elegance. It demonstrates a beautiful freshness with well-melted tannins and a spicy finish.

Where are we traveling?

Salta Located in the northwest of Argentina at the foot of the Andes, the province of Salta is characterized by its diversity of landscapes, its colors, and its transparent sky. Its territory has a great morphological variety and a range of contrasting climates, temperate valleys, tropical jungles and the Andean desert. The combination of climate, soils, human experience and especially altitude (here are the highest vineyards in the world, exceeding 3000 m above sea level) make Salta an oasis wine producer producing great Torrontés wines. Salta is in fact a tropical province crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn. It is well known that wine is not made in tropical regions, due to the high temperatures in these regions. However, as we increase in altitude, the temperature decreases by 1°C every 180 meters. And since the vineyards are usually located here at a height of 2000 meters, it is easy to see that the low latitude is compensated here by a higher altitude.

The little history of the country

Argentina

product descriptions logo

Although Argentina is considered the "new world", its wine tradition is much older than one might think, dating back to the time of Spanish colonization, in the 16th century and then by Italian settlers. Unlike Chile, wine has long been part of the country's culture. No wine-producing country in the world has made more progress in the last years of the 20th century (on the viticultural and oenological level and necessarily financially) which has allowed the country's wine producers to increase quality levels and have succeeded in consolidating an international export market. Argentina has now become the fifth largest wine producing country in the world, after France, Italy, Spain and the United States. Viticulture is practiced mainly in the foothills of the Andes, and more particularly in Mendoza, where the desert landscapes and high altitudes combine to give rise to aromatic and intensely perfumed wines. Some vineyards can even be planted up to 3000 meters above sea level! The terroir here is well suited to the grape variety adopted by Argentina: the omnipresent Malbec. Originally from Bordeaux, he is today responsible for some of the most famous Argentinian wines, which are characterized by their brightness and intensity, with floral notes and dark fruit flavors. Other red varieties produced in Argentina are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bonarda, Syrah, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir. Among white wines, the emblematic grape variety of the Argentine wine region is Torrontés, which gives a wine with a floral and tropical taste. The country also produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Today, Argentinian wines are recognized throughout the world for their full-bodied reds and as high-quality wines.
